Where is the farm?
The farm is located on the front lawn of the Wingate Campus, 600 Kingston Ave, Brooklyn NY 11203. To get to the farm on public transit take the 2 or 5 to Winthrop and walk 3 blocks east. The Farm is on the border of Crown Heights & East Flatbush.
How can I get involved?
- Volunteer! We love volunteers, and love to share our farm and programs with others. Volunteer days occur on Saturdays on designated Volunteer days (check our calendar here). You do not need to RSVP to volunteer, just show up! Volunteer Days run from 10-2, followed by a FREE seasonal workshop from 2-3:30.
- Internships! We have a variety of internship and apprenticeships opportunities for youth and adults, typically in spring and winter. Check out our Employment & Internships page for more information.
- Help fund raise & secure donations! We always need help fundraising for our programs. Its easy to help, you can throw a dinner party, collect donations, plan an event etc. To help with fundraising please contact molly (at) bkfarmyards.com.
- Pick Ups! We are looking for a few good folks with automobiles to help us pick up supplies. We are looking for people who can do regular pick ups in Red Hook and folks with trucks to help for bigger pick ups. Please contact molly (at) bkfarmyards.com.
Is there water/bathrooms on site?
Yes, we have water for drinking on the farm. Please bring your own water bottle. We use the school bathrooms during field trips and volunteer days. To use the bathroom you will need to go through school scanning and/or be accompanied by a farm staff.
Who runs the farm?
The Youth Farm is a program of Green Guerillas in partnership with the High School for Public Service and BK Farmyards. The Programs are run by part-time and volunteer staff, with staffing and administrative assistance from BK Farmyards.
I’d like to make a donation, how do I do that and what do you need?
Thank You! The easiest way to donate is online. Checks and money orders can be mailed to Green Guerillas, 232 E. 11th st, New York, New York, 10003. Please write “Donation to Youth Farm” in the memo line. We also love donations of items. Please see the Wish List here. Items can be dropped off at the farm, 600 Kingston Ave., Brooklyn NY 11203.
What do I need to bring to volunteer?
Please come prepared to do physical work. Please bring food that will nourish your body and respects the earth, and a water bottle. You will need to wear appropriate clothing (that can get dirty) and shoes (meaning shoes that do not have any part of your foot exposed, and have a sturdy sole. Please note sandals, Toms, and Keds are NOT work shoes). You also should bring sun protection.
What happens to the food produced on the farm?
Our produce is used in our youth programming and sold to the community at our Farmers Market and CSA. During the school and summer programs youth practice cooking with our produce alongside discussions around nutrition and food justice. We sell left over produce to several local restaurants and grocers. Please support these establishments and tell them you patronize them because they support our programs.
I'm a reporter/journalist/photographer and would like to do a piece on the farm
We think that press can help to highlight food justice issues and support our farm. Please contact press( at) bkfarmyards.com to schedule a visit to the Farm. We ask for permission to use reports, articles and photos for promotion. Please note that to take pictures on site you will first need permission from staff and obtain permission from anyone in the pictures and a photo release form for any youth.
I'm a student and want to do a report/study your project, how do I learn more?
We are happy to have students learn and report on our programs. We suggest you first read over our entire blog, and then come to volunteer on the farm. While you’re here you can ask any questions you have. Please note that to take pictures on site you will first need permission from staff and obtain photo release forms from anyone in the pictures.
